In its annual report to congress -- 2014 Status of US Fisheries -- the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced last week that west Atlantic bluefin tuna is no longer subject to overfishing.

NOAA’s statement on west Atlantic bluefin is based upon the findings in the most recent stock assessment conducted in October 2014 by a committee of bluefin scientists convened by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). 

This bi-annual stock assessment also found that since 1998, when ICCAT adopted a rebuilding plan for the west Atlantic bluefin, spawning stock biomass increased "dramatically," by 70 percent.
