That was the message given by Karl Almaas, chief executive of Sintef Fisheries and Aquaculture, while speaking in Istanbul last week.

“New technology will enable access to more areas,” Almaas said.

The aquaculture industry faces a dizzying array of hurdles as it matures -- political, marketing, environmental, climatic, and even competition for raw feed materials.

For the industry to worry about real estate is missing the point, he said.

There are already innumerable places with ideal biological and natural conditions for farming fish, he said – including Peru, parts of Africa and Norway and the Iberian Peninsula.
