Nicaragua’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has temporarily banned all shrimp imports from Asia in a bid to prevent the spread of early mortality syndrome (EMS) into the country.

According to a ministerial agreement signed by the agriculture and forestry minister, Ariel Bucardo, the government has banned imports of live or dead shrimp, frozen, raw, cooked or boiled shrimp.

EMS is a bacterial disease identified in Asian shrimp species such as Tiger shrimp and vannamei.

The ban aims to coordinate efforts with producers, associations, universities and laboratories to preserve the health status of the country's fisheries and aquaculture.
