NGOs Centro Ballena Azul, Conservacion Marina, Chile Ambiente, Ecosistemas, the Pumalin Foundation, Terram Foundation, Oceana and World Wildlife Fund say among them there is "absolute consensus about the importance of Chilean Patagonia and its exceptional ecological and cultural value, and the urgency of halting the process of granting aquaculture permits in the south of Chile.”
“It is not advisable to carry on granting aquaculture permits and issuing environmental resolutions until there is clarity about the new regulation that will govern the salmon industry, more so as no measure has been implemented to establish that the ecosystems in Patagonia have minimal protection from the effects of aquaculture,” the NGOs said in the letter.
