The statement from scientists attending the six-day Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant in Madison, Wis., recommends consumers choose fish with high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and low levels of methylmercury.
“There is solid scientific evidence to show that methylmercury has toxic effects, particularly to the developing fetus,” the declaration said. “New evidence indicates that methylmercury exposure may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans, particularly in adult men.”
