Bush included $143 million (€111 million) of new money in the proposed U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) budget, which would allow the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to allocate funds to advance ocean science and research, to protect and restore coastal and marine areas and to end overfishing and ensure sustainable use of ocean resources.

“We think this is an indication that the administration is putting money where their mouth is,” NFI President John Connelly told IntraFish.

The budget is needed to ensure the sustainable use of ocean resources, protect and restore marine coastal areas and fund research that will lead to a greater understanding and management of fisheries and the environment, Connelly said.
