Mexico continues to battle a early mortality syndrome (EMS)-like disease, with the federal government having declared a state of crisis for its aquaculture sector, after seeing a drastic increases in mortalities at shrimp farms, local media reports.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sagarpa), Hector Ortiz Ciscomani, confirmed the shrimp in the northwest region recorded a drastic fall in production, reported Peninsular Digital.

The federal agency reported an agent, as yet unidentified, which has caused high mortality of shrimp culture farms in the states of Sonora, Sinaloa, Nayarit and Baja California Sur.
