Pet food industry giants Mars and Nestle pledged to ensure their pet food supply chains are free of human rights abuses and illegally caught seafood.

Both companies committed to act on transshipping at sea, pressuring suppliers such as Thai Union to eliminate any outstanding risks of human rights abuses and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in its own supply chains, according to Greenpeace USA, who worked with Mars and Nestle on the commitment.

Nestle will implement a full ban on transshipment at sea in its supply chains, while Mars committed to suspend the use of transshipped products if its seafood suppliers cannot address the human rights and illegal fishing issues associated with the practice in the coming weeks.
