Murmansk could play a key role in catering to the Russian domestic fish and seafood demand, as the market is looking to fill the hole left by European and Norwegian suppliers following the introduction of Russian import ban last week.

The region has a powerful trawler fleet and a growing aquaculture industry, and fishing has reached a new post-Soviet high in 2013.

In 2013, the regional fisheries beat a post-Soviet catch record with 697,000 metric tons, an increase of 10.4 percent from the previous year, accounting for about 15 percent of the country's total catch, reported the Barents Observer.
