The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) will look at ways to increase the reach of its certification program to fisheries in regions such as Latin America, Asia and Africa where it is currently largely unrepresented, the organization said.

Around 8 percent of the world’s fisheries landings, or nearly 150 fisheries, are currently certified by the MSC.

The aim is to take this to 15 percent by 2017 and 20 percent by 2020, the MSC said in a newly unveiled five-year business plan.

Regions of interest include “Russia and select countries in South America, the most promising new geographies for increasing the supply of certified seafood over this decade,” the MSC said in the plan.
