The eco-certifier attracted criticism, particularly in Norway, for failing to address the issue of illegal fishing in its accreditation process. In its defense, the MSC cites the example of the South Georgia Patagonian toothfish fishery that was certified a few years ago.
MSC CEO Rupert Howes told IntraFish the fish can't now bear the MSC logo if it has been fished illegally. “The fishery now has its chain of custody," Howes said. This means in the near future the fish could carry the MSC label.
