Third-party certifier TAVEL Certification Inc. made a final recommendation to the MSC to certify the fishery, which would end a process that began nine years ago and allow wild B.C. sockeye salmon to display the blue MSC eco-label.
The Watershed Watch Salmon Society, David Suzuki Foundation, Skeena Wild Conservation Trust, and Headwaters Initiative say they plan to file objections, saying rampant overfishing of sockeye, the designation of parts of the fishery on an NGO “red list” and a federal government inquiry into the fishery show there are enough concerns to not list it as MSC-certified.
