When Kerry Coughlin, MSC Regional Director for the Americas, received word of Aeon Topvalu's break with Alaska salmon on Tuesday, she was pleased.

As the Alaska salmon industry moves to a new certification system, the decision indicates a belief that MSC certification is uniquely valuable, both implicitly and explicitly.

"We do not want more than one label to avoid consumers’ confusion, and we use MSC as the only global standard to achieve accountability for consumers," Aeon Merchandising Division General Manager Yasuyuki Yamamoto wrote.

The FAO-based standards, to be certified by Global Trust, are not up to par for Aeon, the company said.

"I remember when I first read it being quite pleased that Aeon had considered this situation and had given it some thought and

understood that a program that isn’t third-party doesn’t really examine the fish stocks and isn’t really a credible independent third party verification of sustainability and would undermine the commitment to sustainable seafood by companies like Aeon," Coughlin (pictured)...
