More than 1,000 people in the Netherlands are now confirmed tohave been infected with salmonella in an outbreak linked tocontaminated smoked salmon supplied by Harderwijk-headquarteredDutch seafood processor Foppen Eel & Zalm, the Dutch NationalInstitute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) said.

RIVM also said the number of new infections this week issignificantly lower (76 new infections) than the week before,suggesting this major outbreak is finally waning.

The index patient developed symptoms of salmonellosis on June20th, RIVM said. A few more scattered illnesses occurred over thenext several weeks, however, the number of illnesses spikednoticeably in early August.
