The EM plan is part of the Danish industry switch to individual transferable quotas (ITQs) in 2007, which has brought about a huge rationalization of the structure of the Danish fleet.
Mogens Schou, Danish Fisheries Minister Eva Kjer Hansen’s adviser on fisheries and aquaculture, told Fishing News International the industry as a whole has saved an estimated €75 million ($110 million) as a result of this process.
Part of this is has been used to trial and promote a new way of allocating quota, of which the camera system on board fishing vessels is the technological tip of the rationale as a whole that is designed to give fishermen new incentives.
