The cause for the high mortality rate at shrimp farms in Sinaloa, Mexico, remains unknown, Governor Mario Lopez Valdez said, estimating the impact of the crisis to come to MXN 1,000 million (€60.5 million/$79.4 million), reported El Universal.

The National Sanitary and Safety, Agrifood Quality Service (Senasica) expects results of samples to come through in two weeks, which should be able to identify the bacteria or virus affecting the farms, he said.

An area of 28,479 hectares has been affected, with shrimp dying a few months after the stocking phase, affecting 455 farms out of 571, he said,

So far, the production losses have reached 18,724 metric tons, and farmers have been requesting federal aid.
