EU member state representatives met Thursday to agree on the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) for the next budgetary period, 2014-2020. But members of the European Parliament said the position member states are considering is so uncompromising that they may cause talks to collapse, reported European Voice.

On April 30, 38 MEPs released an open letter to member states saying they will block an agreement on the new CFP if the council refuses to compromise.

"If this group of member states form a blocking minority in council and refuse to give the Irish presidency a mandate to meet the Parliament halfway, then the fisheries reform may well be completely blocked," the letter said.

The parliament voted a position in February that would immediately end discards of unwanted catches.
