Marine Harvest Chile CEO Alvaro Jimenez personally informed workers at the Tepual processing plant in Puerto Montt the facility will be temporarily closed for more than a year.

"Due to a sharp drop in the production volume because of the sanitary situation affecting the salmon industry in Chile, Marine Harvest has been compelled to temporarily halt operations at its Tepual plant for 15 months," he said.

Jimenez said 513 workers are affected by the closure, which will occur in October.

Marine Harvest, which at one time operated as many as five plants in the region, will, as of November, only be running its Delifish smokehouse operation in Chile.
