The salmon escaped from the Marine Harvest Canada farm in Port Elizabeth, Gilford Island, about 40 kilometers east of Port McNeil.
An investigation is being conducted as to what caused the holes in the net pens, spokesman Clare Backman told IntraFish.
Marine Harvest, which has 18 million fish in its farms at any one time, about half of all farmed salmon in B.C., estimated the loss at CAD $1 million ($950,853/€632,016).
The fish weighed almost five kilograms each, were healthy and close to their harvest weight.
