Some of the largest fish farming companies in the world may be on the verge of replacing traditional marine resources needed to maintain high levels of omega-3s with a plant grown at a nearby production facility.

Alltech, a nutrition company focused on fermentation based in Lexington, Kentucky, has been growing algae at its production facility for several years with the hope it could provide an alternative to fishmeal and fish oil. Up until a few months ago, critics said it was all hype, but Marine Harvest, AquaChile and salmon farming consortium Salmon Group say otherwise.
