The fishing industry took another hit in the mainstream UK media this week with newspapers advising consumers not to eat mackerel as it was an “overfished species."
London daily newspaper Metro reported Tuesday that consumers should avoid choosing smoked mackerel products because the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) had reported it was no longer a sustainable fishery -- as a result of the European Union/Norway - Iceland/Faroes quota dispute.
In fact, the MCS has downgraded mackerel and removed from its fish-to-eat list, warning consumers it should no longer eat the species regularly.
