American seafood producer Mar-Lees' venture into plated meals last fall is already paying off dividends, said CEO Zeke Shahin.

Since purchasing the CHI packing facility in Plattsburgh, New York, in November, the company's been able to connect with new clients while expanding its product line to some of the largest American retail grocers, including Safeway, Big Y and Price Chopper, he said.

Although known for its scallop production and seafood appetizers, the New York facility is producing "plated meals," a series of heat-and-eat products including chicken, pulled pork, meatloaf, meat and vegetarian lasagna.
