Malaysian shrimp farmer Sunlight Seafood is changing the plankton it uses in its farms in hopes of winning the battle against early mortality syndrome (EMS).
EMS has destroyed shrimp populations in China, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, and while some researchers believe that industrial pollution could be behind the disease, the main cause of EMS has not been determined yet.
During IntraFish’s recent visit to one of Sunlight’s farms in Perak, Malaysia, the company’s managing director Yu Woon Gin said that after changing the type of plankton used in the ponds, it seems like mortality rate has fallen.
