LTT Aquaculture, Malaysia’s largest breeder of the freshwater fish, empurau, is eyeing Taiwan as its next major export market.

The company, which has some 20,000 tails of marketable empurau at its Asajaya farm, already has a firm presence in the Hong Kong market, according to the Malaysian Daily Star.

LTT air freights live empurau, dubbed the “King of the Sarawak Rivers” to Hong Kong, Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia.

The fish is sold at RM750 (€173.7/$235) per kg to importers in Hong Kong.

LTT managing diector Bill Lu Thian Tack said several potential buyers from Taiwan, including fish wholesalers and retailers as well as restaurant operators, were keen to import the empurau.
