Mainstream Chile is the first company in the salmon industry to implement a freshwater mortality system, which it showcased this week at one of its farms near Puerto Varas.
This initiative, in operation for about one month, entails reducing the organic waste from dead fish and transforming it into harmless matter, free of bacteria and viruses.
The process consists of putting the daily buckets of dead fish into a stainless steel tank, which also has the function of crushing the waste. A 3 percent formic acid solution is added, which stabilizes the mortality pH.
