The reason is Canadians are keen to target exports of mackerel to Japan after previously using mackerel for fishmeal production.
Million dollar market
Japan is without a doubt the most important market for Norwegian mackerel. Including exports to China, which is mainly engaged in value-added production for the Japanese market, the value of exports last year amounted NOK 1.5 billion ($227.6 million/€188.6 million). Last year produced good prices, and for some sizes export value doubled in relation to 2003.
According to Strommen, who is among those that know the mackerel market best, this favorable market situation will be replaced by an extremely difficult market this fall, with pressure on prices, on top of which the Norwegian mackerel quotas will be lower than previous years.
