This month’s Fishing News International cover story highlights the problems of the rising cost of fuel and the fishing industry’s over-dependence on it.

Couple this with the daily news of reported dwindling stocks, constantly shrinking quotas and the ongoing media and propaganda attacks on the industry by green groups and it all adds up to a depressing feeling of doom and gloom.

But all is not quite as sad as it would appear and the staging of the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels later this month is once again a timely reminder of the size of the vast international seafood industry and the huge level of finance involved.

There is no doubt that the global fishing industry continues to evolve and certain systems and operations will die off and be replaced by more sustainable means of fishing, albeit on a reduced level.

But the demand for high quality seafood remains constant and as long as this demand remains, there will always be a fishing...
