In a taste test conducted by restauranteur Mark Hix, who owns and runs three fish restaurants in London and Dorset, Lidl’s Ocean Sea Norwegian Smoked Salmon scored four stars – the best of the products in the test.

The discount brand, available for £1.59 for 200 grams, was commended for its “good balance of fish and smoke flavors,” by Hix, writing in The Times.

The product scored higher than Marks & Spencer Kiln Roasted Orkney Smoked Salmon, costing £4.99 for 100 grams, which Hix gave three stars and noted that despite “quality fish” it was “a shame the smoke overpowers it.”
