The proposed law would consolidate the fishery into a single cooperative.
"By removing the 'race to fish' or derby-style fishery, our vessels will be able to choose the weather in which to fish, to slow the pace of the fishery, to conserve many thousands of gallons of fuel oil, to better conserve the resource, and most importantly to keep our crews safe," Kenny Down, coalition executive director, told IntraFish. "The overall safety of our fleet will be greatly improved."
The coalition represents 34 of the 36 hook-and-line catcher-processors operating in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands area.
