The state Department of Health issued a permit last week to allow Sunrise Capital to resume farming shrimp in ponds on the island of Kauai, Pacific Business News reported.
Sunrise last year purchased the assets of Ceatech USA Inc. for less than $426,000 (€337,495) after the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
In its original permit application, Sunrise sought approval to operate up to 44 acres of shrimp ponds, and to discharge billions of gallons of shrimp waste. Residents feared this would bring sharks to nearby west Kauai surf spots, and state officials said the permit would be amended to address such concerns, the report said.
