When it begins farming yellowtail in Mexico, Kona Blue says the fish will be grown to the same standards as those raised in Hawaii – but the production model for the two areas will be different.

Where Kona Blue grows the fish in its net pens offshore of Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island, the company plans to contract the growing of fish to local farmers in Mexico, company cofounder Neil Sims told IntraFish.

“We were looking for ways to further expand, and one of the ways we intend to do this is by following the Newman Ranch model of using third-party growers,” said Sims, the president of Kona Blue who this summer took on the role of CEO after Mike Wink left the company.
