The chum salmon industry in Hokkaido, Japan’s north most island, is a major supplier to the world salmon markets.

According to Noritsugu Shigeoka, managing director of the Hokkaido segment of the Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations, the industry expects a run of 150,000 metric tons for 2011.

The industry was not impacted by the earthquake, tsunami or the subsequent nuclear crisis, but is concerned about perceptions in the market that it is.
