Japan is expected to see a continued low scallop supply in the wake of the lowest landings in nearly 30 years in Hokkaido.
In the Sea of Okhotsk, the most prolific grounds, landings of scallops will likely decline to 186,000 metric tons for the 2016 season (April through March), down 12 percent from the previous season.
According to the Hokkaido Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Association, this is the lowest output in the Heisei era, which began on January 8, 1989.
The decline in landings is primarily due to the damage from the low pressure systems and storms in the winter of 2014.
