In addition, many EU and third countries will not be ready to implement the new regulations by the January deadline, said Seafish secretary Malcolm Large.
“The regulations could undermine the EU’s aim of promoting economic development in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries by creating administrative hurdles to trade,” said Large.
Around 20 percent by volume of the EU’s fish trading partners have not been officially advised of the new rules, according to the European Commission.
The regulations introduce a catch certification scheme to improve the traceability of all fishery products that are imported into the EU.
