The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) is requiring 100 percent of purse seine vessels to have observer coverage as part of resolution 12-03, which goes into effect Jan. 1.

Observer coverage is already required of Pacific Ocean purse seiners but has yet to become mandatory for those in the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean.

“This measure is designed to bring global consistency to all purse seine vessels,” Mike Crispino, vice president of communications and outreach for the ISSF, told IntraFish

The resolution allows for electronic observers, as long as that proves effective.
