Lobster, once viewed purely as a luxury item for the rich and famous, has morphed into an affordable dining option as record harvests have led to a massive surplus and some of the lowest prices in recent memory.

But while the price of lobster has shriveled from $6 (€4.43) per pound wholesale in 2005, to half that last year, shrimp is on the brink of pricing itself itself into the luxury category normally associated with lobster. Thanks to an outbreak of early mortality syndrome (EMS) in Asia and Mexico, the global shrimp supply has been drastically reduced, sending prices upward.
