A 200-metric-ton jade perch facility will open its doors in November, 2013, in Belgium -- and the lead researchers have high hopes.

Helmed by aquaculture researchers at K.U. Leuven Research & Development, it is the first commercial jade perch production site in Europe, and aims to, in the long run, repeat the success story of tilapia in European markets.

“We believe jade perch could become the new tilapia,” Ivo Roelants, IP officer at the university told IntraFish.

The two fish have many similarities such as their robustness and adaptability to diverse environments.
