The quota for the 2009-2010 season that ends in January is 16 million pounds, 17.9 percent lower than the quota for the 2008-09 season set by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.

The opening of the fishery finds fishermen and processors on edge, as thoughts of the economy have people wondering how strong demand will be.

"With red crab, everyone is all concerned because the inventory of domestic porduct got cleared out in the last month or two, but with the recession and crab being such a white-tablecloth item, we'll see how it goes," Steve Minor, executive director of the North Pacific Crab Association, told IntraFish.
