In 2015 around 22,000 metric tons of frozen cod was exported from Norway for reprocessing in China -- less than half the volumes from the previous year, indicating a change in the country's role as the world's seafood processor, according to executives in the sector.
Thomas Farstad, CEO of Norway Seafoods, told IntraFish Media publication FiskeribladetFiskaren a range of factors is changing the landscape.
“Exports to China have met with challenges due to increased costs in the country," he said. "The Chinese economy is closely linked to the US dollar and when that strengthens, costs in China rise considerably more on the global market."
