Big is bad, small is good. It’s a mantra that’s starting to remind me of "four legs good, two legs bad."

A few years ago, one of the world’s largest trawlers was summarily booted out of Australian waters.

It had precious little to do with evidence, and everything to do with emotion and the big/bad mantra that seems to demand that fishermen should preferably do their work in open cockleshells, have beards like Captain Birdseye and speak like Long John Silver.

Maybe there are people who’d like fishermen to go back to wearing wooden boots and oilskins that really are made of oiled animal skin?

The supposition is that small boats are somehow great for the environment.
