The new pelagic trawler Western Viking was handed over on Oct. 2 by Karstensens Shipyard at Skagen in Denmark to owner Frank Doherty of Kincasslagh, Ireland.
This is the third Western Viking since 1997 from the yard for Frank Doherty. The ship is skippered by his son Enda Doherty, fishing for mainly mackerel and horse mackerel, as well as other species.
Western Viking will fish alongside Western Chieftain, also a Karstensens build, and Girl Stephanie.
The previous 51-meter Western Viking was completed by Karstensens in 2005 and sold to owners in Northern Ireland earlier this year ahead of the new vessel’s delivery.
