Traditionally a meat-eating country, the Czech Republic’s per capita seafood consumption is still relatively low.

According to data from the European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture (EUMOFA), every one of the 10.5 million inhabitants currently eats an average of 9.3 kg of fish and seafood every year.

“Fish is simply not part of the [Czech] culture,” Maria Kivijarvi Heggen, regional manager Central Eastern Europe at the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC), told IntraFish.

“It’s a meat-eating country and fish is like a new concept to consumers.”
