On Tuesday, Jim Ianelli, stock assessment scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), offered his initial report on the 2014 harvest figures for Alaska pollock, suggesting an Acceptable Biological Catch (ABC) of 1.369 million metric tons.

Ianelli spoke about his 101-page report in front of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council’s Groundfish Plan Team, saying overall the fisheries appear in good shape.

According to the report, fishing mortality for the oldest age groups of fish has increased since 2011, but the fish hatched in 2008 appear to be "slow-growing," 20 percent lower body mass than the average for that age group.
