The Science journal paper, "Rebuilding Global Fisheries," said modern management can be an effective way to restore stocks and marine environments, though there was still much work to be done to improve many of the world's stocks.

The pape, by Boris Worm and Ray Hilborn and other researchers, concluded: "Management actions have achieved measurable reductions in exploitation rates in some regions," but added a significant fraction of collapsed stocks will remain so unless further reductions are made.

The paper stands in apparent contradiction to an earlier study written by Worm in 2006, which suggested world fisheries could collapse by 2048.
