Last week, reports from India suggested a new vannamei shrimp disease -- dubbed the running mortality syndrome (RMS) -- is making its way through the country's ponds, hitting in particular farmers in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

It was reportedly observed in farms in the last few months, and now, after a record production in 2014, the industry is now expecting a shortfall in the current year.

So far, relatively little is known about RMS, and opinions vary on how dangerous the syndrome really is for India's expanding vannamei farming industry.
