Indian aquaculture crossed a milestone when it produced its first specific pathogen free (SPF) vannamei broodstock, and is in-line with shrimp farmers increasingly switching over to farming vannamei over black tiger shrimp.

"Penaeus monodon production has already been overtaken by vannamei culture in India," P. Jayagopal, project manager at the shrimp broodstock breeding program at the  Rajiv Gandhi Center for Aquaculture (RGCA), told IntraFish.

Jayagopal pointed out that there are no SPF broodstock available for monodon shrimp in India, and sounded confident that the system of checks and balances in India can keep out most diseases that can afflict shrimp.
