An Indian research group at the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture is urging Indian shrimp farmers to cooperate to prevent the spread of the parasitic disease Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP), reports The Times of India.
EHP is affecting the growth of farmed black tiger and vannamei shrimp and has been causing "huge losses" to commercial shrimp farmers in the country, the news website reported.
It is believed to be spreading from contaminated water or soil through oral feeding. The parasite multiplies in the cells of the hepatopancreas (digestive gland) of the shrimp and impedes the process of food digestion, resulting in slow and stunted growth.
