India's growing wealthy population is well traveled and discerning, and brand names play an increasingly important role in its spending habits.

The seafood sector is no different, and a segment of the quality-conscious conscious consumers are demanding premium and branded seafood, Sangram Sawant of Pescafresh -- a seafood supplying company based in Mumbai -- told IntraFish.

"Indians are biased towards fresh fish, and there is an abundant supply in the unorganized sector [local fishmongers, wet fish markets]," Sawant said.

The organized sector usually goes towards frozen seafood, which can go off if there are power cuts, which are frequent in India.
