India has already seen more than 100 vessels converted for multi-day tuna longlining, while handling and packaging centers are being set up in Vishakhapatnam, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai and Port Blair.

"India is currently exporting $50 million (€32 million) worth of tuna each year," Kumar says. "We want to take these exports up to $500 million (€320 million) in the next five years. It’s an ambitious dream but one that’s not beyond the realms of possibility. India is determined to develop its tuna sector, at least as much as any other part of its seafood industry."

According
