Iceland Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Einar Gudfinnsson said Friday the label, under discussion the past year, will focus on traceability and sustainable fishing efforts.
Third-party certifiers will be used to assess sustainability.
Iceland remains steadfast in its opposition to fisheries certification group the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Gudfinnsson told IntraFish.
“The MSC doesn’t suit us,” said Gudfinnsson. “We ‘re not particularly keen on having such an super-national organization hold the reins over our fisheries policy.”
